In Charge

Perform 4-7s child

In Charge is a simple yet empowering game that builds focus, teamwork and leadership skills.

With one child leading the group's movements, everyone must tune in closely, watching for subtle cues, matching timing and working together as a silent ensemble.

It's an excellent way to sharpen observation skills, boost body awareness and strengthen group concentration, all while giving each child a turn in the spotlight.

Perform 4-7s child

How to play

1. Choose a leader

Select one child to be "In Charge" of the group. Everyone else spreads out in the room.

2. Start walking

Ask all the children to walk around the space, calmly and with awareness.

3. Follow the leader - silently

The child who is "In Charge" can stop and start whenever they like. The rest of the group must keep their eyes on them and copy exactly when they stop or go, without any verbal clues.

4. Change leaders

After a minute or two, choose a new child to be In Charge. Repeat several rounds so everyone gets a turn.

What it teaches

  • Focus and observation - watching closely for subtle movements
  • Leadership - taking responsibility and guiding others
  • Cooperation - working silently as a group
  • Self-regulation - reacting with precision and control
  • Confidence - performing a leadership role in front of peers

Variations to try

  • In Charge dance: Let the leader add dance moves instead of just stopping and starting
  • Double leaders: Two children lead at once - can the group follow both?
  • Animal walks: The leader chooses how the group moves, for example, like a duck, tiger, or kangaroo

Principal's notes

This is one of those beautifully simple games that teaches so much - observation, leadership and stillness. It's also brilliant fun!
